A career in the Disability Sector can be a positive and highly rewarding carer where you can make a real difference in people's lives who live with varying disabilities. The role of a Support worker is to help maintain and continually assist participants to help build capacity in their lives.

The key role of a support worker is to provide supports to participants which aligns with the goals in their NDIS plans. These goals are then placed in a Care Plan which is carefully formulated between the participant and the organisation/staff member to ensure that supports are helping to build the capacity of the participant and help enable them to achieve their personal goals listed on their NDIS plan. While the role of a support worker at times can be challenging, it can also be quite rewarding as you see participants achieve their various goals. Being a support worker often requires a lot of on-the-spot critical thinking which lends itself to being able to improve skillsets in various areas of healthcare and assistance they provide.

What's needed to be a support worker?

To be able to work in the disability industry in Queensland you are required to hold a valid NDIS working screening card (previously known as yellow card), and a paid Blue Card (if you are working with young people under the age of 18).
