All children have their ways of dealing with their emotions of being upset, frustrated, angry and experience loss of hurt in various degrees. One of the most crucial skills for carers or parents is to teach children how to manage and express these emotions in a safe and developmentally appropriate way.
What is Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)?
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention is a crisis intervention of models developed alongside CARE at Cornell University. Through this approach, children can learn constructive and adaptive ways to deal with frustration, failure, anger, rejection, hurt and depression when they see their carers manage crisis constructively.
Through TCI this evidence-informed model is used to teach staff, parents and carers how to help children handle stress in constructive ways where they learn to:
- Prevent a crisis from happening
- De-escalate a potential crisis
- Safely and therapeutically manage crisis situations
- Constructively handle stressful situations
- Support Children to improve their coping strategies
By using the sources of TCI, staff will have the skills and knowledge to make professional judgement in responding to a crisis where we will create safe and supporting environments for children that promote growth, development and self-regulations.
